My experience with the BMBCC

Hey, I’m D. J. Manuel and I’d like to share how the Birmingham Metro Black Chamber of Commerce has impacted my business. But first, here’s a quick fire background about me.

D. J. Manuel and daughter, Faith Manuel at the Alabama State Black Chamber Conference
  • D. J. Manuel, Birmingham native, Ramsay High School graduate, Auburn University Graduate.
  • Married to Dr. Melissa Manuel, with 2 adult children, and 2 cats.
  • Pastor, Author, and Entrepreneur (Website Designer)
  • Moved back to Birmingham in 2021 from Newnan, Georgia.

Now, with that out of the way, let me tell you my experience with the BMBCC.

Inclusion

I joined the BMBCC before I had even unpacked all of my moving boxes. (I still have a few boxes left. Don’t judge me.)  The first thing I noticed was the welcoming spirit. In the meetings everyone mattered and every business was important. The recruitment team took time to get to know me and even offered me an opportunity to share in one of the meetings. It’s rare to find an organization that will allow you to contribute as an equal member.

Opportunities

During chamber meetings I heard information about opportunities like the Penny Foundation grant. I applied and was awarded! I heard about free courses on Quickbooks. I took the course. I learned about an opportunity to hire an intern through Birmingham’s Promise and signed up. I couldn’t take advantage of every opportunity but when I applied myself, I was rewarded with growth in my business. The BMBCC shares numerous opportunities for any business to avail themselves.

Networking

Before returning to Birmingham, I had not lived here in 30 years. Needless to say, I only knew my family members and a few social media friends. Through the BMBCC I’ve been able to meet some incredible professionals with whom I plan to collaborate in the future. The BMBCC members have brought me up to speed on the changes in the business landscape and introduced me to several key figures in the community. Through the partnership with the Alabama Black Chamber of Commerce, I have been able to network with other business owners throughout the state.

As we navigate the changes in our society, I believe we will all find strength in numbers. I really hope you will add your business, expertise, and passion by joining the BMBCC. I look forward to working with you in the future.
